Some of you have heard me mention it and some of you have not, but I need the help of all of you with this one. Roofers, plumbers, gardeners, cleaners, sweepers, writers, leaders, workers, profess-ers, watchers, whatever you wanna call it, friends and ourselves are going to be demo'ing the interior of 428 E. North Ave., a three-story fire-damaged rowhome off of North Ave. and Greenmount Ave.

It's a burnt-up three-story brick row house that's part of the Steady Baltimore Museum project in which art shows, workshops and various activities will be hosted while we flow towards the use of the neighboring building that is currently undergoing structural repairs to the rear wall. If you're a little behind on the Museum project and our mural painting and other art activities, please check out the blog at www.steadybaltimore.com for some posts of our recent projects.

So if you're looking for a good way to clear out some of that pent-up aggression and rage and make a lot of noise, this will be the place to do it! It's guaranteed to yield you a good workout and a great space to chill at in the near future.

What you should bring:

We'll make sure to keep you FED and busy as a bee! Snacks and hopefully some good eats will be served! Starting early so remember... come early for the best destruction!

I'm sorry this is at such short notice, everyone, but I just found out myself. Tomorrow morning, at 6 am, the cops will be evicting 40+ people from the encampment under the expressway, north of E. Madison and between Guilford and Fallsway. Two residents, Jacqui and Jeremy, have sent out press releases to the media and have homeless advocacy lawyers coming to observe. However, they are also asking anyone who can to show up and be a witness. If any of you have legal observer training, your presence would be very, very helpful.

35-year-old Mike Herron, who also goes by the name “Ryke” was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

The debilitating effects of this disease have caused significant financial strain for Mike and his four beautiful children. The side effects from prescribed chemotherapy treatments have made it impossible for Mike to work. Without health insurance and having to endure a 1-3 year wait for SSI/Disability assistance, this family is in a bind. Join the community as we show our support and lend a hand to this deserving family.

Congratulations to yours and ours On November 21st, 2009, we received notification that our request for architectural design assistance with the North Ave. building in need of rehab has been accepted. This means that we have been awarded assistance from a team of architects with the drafting of conceptual drawings for the building. In mid-2010, you will be able to view our plans for the gallery and youth mentoring center... but in the meantime, this means that we have the right to proceed with business as usual. Hope Under Occupation: Visualizing the Resistance in Palestine

walls that imprison, learn about the creative tactics being used in
Palestine to resist, remember, and keep hope alive.
Pam Rasmussen, a veteran of the weekly demonstrations in Bil'in and
Nil'in will discuss the campaign there to stop the Wall.

Sabreena Da Witch (Abeer), a Palestinian Hip-Hop artist, featured in
the award-winning documentary Slingshot Hip-Hop, will share her
experience as an artist working to bring attention to the occupation.

We will also be showcasing some of the best graffiti from the West
Bank, the Wall, and Gaza. The event will include music and video as well!

Jake War @ ONWARD - Philly!

Work by Baltimore artist Jake War will be featured at the Onward '09: Juried Photo Competition at Project Basho Gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Onward '09 is a photography competition that attracted 413 photographers nationally and internationally who submitted over 1600 photographs. Peter Barberie, the Curator of Photographs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the juror for the event selected 73 photos by 69 photographers. The official opening of the show is January 10, 2009 from 2-5 pm and will close on February 22, 2009. Project Basho Gallery is located in the Old Kensington neighborhood in Philly here's the address, and I hope to see everybody in the place to be. Peace.

Street art extravaganza, Bits and Pieces, featuring aerosol imagery from a selection of the original style creators and emerging street artists is presented by Steady Baltimore for your visual pleasure. The style of the letter is a primary tool with which many graffiti artists choose to express themselves. Much like professional calligraphists, Baltimore based artists JaziRock and Booda Wyse have spent decades studying the art of the letter.

Characters and abstract shapes are a constant inclusion in visual art with an urban foundation. Blister & Ways along with other artists in the show have introduced to the public their diverse platforms of creation through their previous exhibitions in the Baltimore, DC and Philadelphia metro areas.

With artists who specialize in adaptation, this malleable show space will be transformed into a three dimensional plethora of visual expression. With an alternative display of canvas, mixed media and other true school artifacts this event will be something Baltimore has never seen before.

Enthusiasts and artists alike will enjoy the exhibit focused on accentuating the individual characteristics of the graffiti art form. Complimenting the artwork will be Monkey Hustle and Steady Baltimore’s own, DJ Stretch (myspace.com/stretchthevulgarian), spinning break beats, club and hip-hop.

The opening reception is from 7pm-2am on Saturday May 31, 2008 at Rockstar Showrooms at 515 Cathedral St. Baltimore, MD 21201 (just south of Centre St. in Mt. Vernon).

Named after their own independent record label and production house, Emynd & Bo Bliz’s Crossfaded Bacon 2008 Mix” is a double disc mix E&B prepared before hitting up SXSW this year for the Flamin Hotz showcase in Austin, Texas. Each mix is a tightly-wound, inte nse, listenable journey that demonstrates each of Emynd & Bo Bliz’s personal tastes, production, and DJing abilities. Emynd’s mix starts off with some lesser known New Orleans Bounce music (including his NOLA Bounce remix of the South Rakkas Crew “Mad Again” which will be released on Mad Decent later this year) and then steadily progresses through some Hyphy, some up-tempo, breakbeat-heavy old-school rap, switching up rather dramatically to explore some House before finally progressing into Baltimore Club and Philly Party music (most of which is self-produced). The mixtape focuses on Emynd’s production abilities and showcases several tracks that will be released this year on Mad Decent, Flamin Hotz, and independently on Crossfaded Bacon Records.

Bo Bliz describes his mix simply enough as “a mix full of songs I like to listen to.” Chock full of Philly rap, Dirty South anthems, Dancehall, and Soul and R&B classics, Bliz’s mix is a very listenable exploration of his far reaching personal tastes. While several of these tracks are club staples that never get old, Bo didn’t forget to include some rare and exclusive tracks you’ve likely never heard before, as well as several songs that he himself produced.

The April 5th NBTB show @ Lo-Fi Social Club turned out to be a wide assortment of visual and performance art. The exhibition displayed the works of more than 15 artists from various wavelengths of the street art scene. Vive La Decadence also came through with an awesome 'theatrical' entourage of rhythmic talent on the stage. DIG Dj's Napspace and Landis Expandis rocked it as expected... check them out at Joe2 for DIG Tuesdays or our next Nothing but the Breaks show on June 6th. We have nothing but appreciation for those who came to check us out.

FROM THE BRONX TO BMORE

In the 70's, art and music exclusive to the streets and YMCA's of the Bronx personified an inner city environment that begged for an escape from crime and poverty. While POSE 2 designed the fliers and Afrika Bambaataa controlled the crowd with the ones and two's, people from all over NYC for one night forgot about gangs, poverty and politics.

Should it be a surprise that with those same hip-hop founding conditions existing in Baltimore today, that it too is seeking an outlet? Steady Baltimore and DIG's "Nothing But the Breaks" has become that outlet for an emerging sub-culture of street and graffiti artists and lovers of funk and soul music.

Also known as "DIG" on Tuesday's, DJ duo Landis Expandis and Napspace keep the B-Boys and crowd moving spinning nothing but the funkiest breaks around. Emerging street and graffiti artists BillyMode, Jazirock, El Toro (PHILLY), Adam Neubauer (DC), Ners Boogie and Joe Ride display 70s themed works on canvas, 70s vinyl records and found material.

Politics, poverty and crime aside, Nothing But The Breaks is Baltimore's answer to its vices and ills.

Of the senses, the sense of sight is one of the most important. Utilizing paint cans as brushes and the urban landscape as a canvas, graffiti artist take full advantage of the sense of sight.
They challenge the public to relentlessly decipher thought-provoked messages. The sense of hearing is another pathway in which Baltimore's underground culture has chosen to express itself to the public. Artists in this exhibit use installations that create sonic appeal to complement an already visual experience.
The use of visual and acoustic stimulus will continue to be an epidemic used to convey reality. Prepare to get your eyes and ears bugged out in this infusion of the spray can and the subwoofer.

This show will contain several speaker/canvas/mixed media installations all derived from the environments in which graffiti exists.

There will also be several other local 'street artists' showing work at the event.

"Penn Station"

Greenwich Village and Soho immediately comes to mind once inside the H & H Building on West Franklin Street. No longer are you in downtown Baltimore on a Saturday night. But instead the arts district of the Lower East Side. Step inside the old school, graffiti covered elevator, push the button for the third floor and welcome to the Whole Gallery. Tonight is the opening for All That Remains, curated by Emily C-D. Far from your typical art show, tonight’s featured artists are displaying pieces made from salvaged materials that most would not think twice about before discarding.

The creativity put into the pieces, which ranged from instruments, paintings and Abu the Flute maker’s inventive “First Bass Harp” is crazy. Tony Smith, the man behind the homemade violins, guitars and banjos made of turtle shells, string, some chord and wooden boxes couldn’t have put it any better when he said, “Nothing old is useless when you can add six strings & tune it to a chord & sing a song.” Not to be mistaken these pieces can actually play as the instrument that it is emulating.
In fact, the music acts of the night “the band Frontier Dentists” and “Abu the Flute maker” used a few to entertain the crowd.

The theme of the night was all about expressing talent using everyday items in ways no one would have thought. But no one seemed to have a bolder message in their work than Rachel Bradley with her “Hell Boxes”. Too intense to explain and too complex to describe, the most obvious issues however, Ms. Bradley touched on were sex, masturbation and cunnilingus. Enough said.

Saturday night was definitely all about creativity and having an open mind.

Objects of Adoration, curated by Rachel Bradley, explores the modes and techniques of exaltation from medieval and renaissance era religious art as they influence and inform art today. Inspired by the relics of the churches in Italy and Northern Europe, Objects of Adoration brings together five artists from across the US to contemplate the need to destroy reality in order to worship its image, transforming a bone into an artifact or a celebrity into a saint. Participating Artists include: Marc Burckhardt, Luca Dipierro, John Grider, Chehalis Hegner, and Nicholas Kashian. (MAP)
